Blue Sky

I unpacked my stuff in room 604.
They said they thought I was someone’s younger sister.

A rebel streak was unloaded with my things.
It wound its way around my ankle and pulled me toward the
illegal activity occurring on our floor.
The vodka bottle kept in a rain boot.

I thought blunt meant straightforward, or a dull knife
but apparently there are other meanings.

We spent our time on his futon.
The metal bar would uncomfortably push into my back
but I was sitting next to him, so I didn't care.

I was given the fun I had been wanting.
But fun turned into fear when he flipped chairs in the lobby
and drunkenly begged me to talk to him in the staircase
“you know I cared about you, don’t you?”

He kept gravity on his windowsill
(a V8 splash bottle)
but it didn’t pull him to earth,
it sent him ascending into galaxies of his own.

I remember the time we watched the meteor shower
The windows were down and so we held hands as we winded up the mountain.
He probably doesn’t even remember-
He was closer to the stars that night then he was to me.

At times we’d just talk – religion, drugs, our favorite music.
He forced me to listen to Blue Sky by the Allman brothers
and I tried to make John Mayer
sound a lot cooler then he really was.

He was atheist and my Baptist background wasn’t convinced.
But I didn’t judge, that wasn’t my job
So I listened to his arguments about evolution
And he’d ignore my thoughts about God.

You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way
 turn your love my way
yeah
